Steps to removing a scratch or dried stain from a 100% Acrylic Solid Surface Countertop
Items Needed:
Care Kit provided at the time of installation.
Items to maintain finish.
When removing a scratch you will compomise the finish you have developed. Try to limit the area you work on to right around the scratch.
Step 1 Evaluate the depth of the scratch and select a pad.
The care kit comes with 4 sanding pads. Brown is the most abrasive. The pads become less abrasive in the following order... Burgundy-Gold, Orange-Olive and Teal-Grey. Grey is the least abrasive. The easiest way to evaluate the depth of a scratch is by running your finger nail over it. If your finger nail catches on the scratch, then try the gold colored pad. If your finger nail does not catch, then try the olive.
Step 2 Sand out the scratch.
Use the selected pad with the weight of your hand for pressure... do not apply a lot of pressure with your fingers as this will cause and uneven sand. A 2" x 2" sample of 100% Acrylic Solid Surface® has been included with these instructons as a sanding block for the pads. Place it on top of the pad.
Sand in a straight line over the scratch. Go back and forth and then up and down over the same area. Sand no more than 30 seconds in one direction. After a few minutes check your work. Be sure to rinse the area with a wet cloth and then dry it. Be sure to rinse the abrasive pad as well. Use the finger nail test to measure your progress. If you feel your progress is too slow, then go to a more abrasive pad. Return to the less abrasive pad as the depth of the scratch decreases.
Step 3 Return the spot you worked on to the finish of the top.
Once the scratch is gone to your satisfaction, evaluate the finish of the area you have been working on. If it is close to the finish on the rest of the top, then use your method for maintaining the finish to blend it in with the rest of the top.
If the area you have been working on is duller than the rest of the top, then use the abrasive pad just less abrasive than the one you finished with. Remeber do not use a lot of pressure. Go over it a few times. Rinse and compare the finish to the rest of your top. If it is close to the finish on the rest of the top, then use your method for maintaining the finish to blend it in with the rest of the top.
If the area you have been working on is shinier than the rest of the top, then use the abrasive just more abrasive than the one you finished with. Remember do not use a lot of pressure. Go over it a few times. Rinse and compare the finish to the rest of your top. If it is close to the finish on the rest of the top, then use your method for maintaining the finish to blend it in with the rest of the top.
